Shutters: A Safe and Fashionable Child’s Window Treatment

Posted on November 4, 2011

While carpets and wall coverings get plenty of attention when it comes to the decor in a child's bedroom, there is often little thought given to the window treatments beyond choosing a colour for the curtains. Colour is important, but so is the treatment itself. Shutters provide a modern alternative to the traditional curtain or blind.

Practical

Factors to take into consideration when choosing the window treatments in a child's room include the level of light pollution outside the window, how noisy the street below is, and how much direct sunlight pours through the window during the day.

City dwellers in particular deal with light pollution on a grand scale. Street lights directly outside a window mean the bedroom is rarely adequately dark, and curtains do little to combat the problem. Wooden slats, on the other hand, close more fully, eliminating the gaps in curtains that allow light to seep into the room. Children of all ages need good quality sleep in order to function and learn effectively during the day, so it makes sense to darken their bedrooms as far as possible.

Street noise, whether from traffic or the voices of passers-by, is a second factor. A snugly fitting wooden structure in the window enclosure gives an extra layer of protection, muffling outside noise more effectively than curtains or blinds.

During the day, the slats may be opened or closed to let in exactly the amount of light needed, creating a pleasing, ambient atmosphere without the harsh glare of direct sunlight.

Safe

Parents go to great lengths to ensure maximum safety for their children, making sure the furniture in the room complies with modern safety or fire regulations and their toys bear the kite mark of safety.

While either Venetian or roller blinds may give a similar, neat aesthetic, neither has the same safety aspect. The dangling cords of roller blinds present a strangulation danger to small children who may accidentally become entangled either whilst jumping to reach cords tied out of their reach, or whilst swinging on cords allowed to dangle down. The wands of venetian blinds are also tempting to children, who may inadvertently pull too hard and detach the blind from its fixings. The alternatives present none of these dangers. There are no cords or wands to tempt little fingers into danger.

Customisable

As the child grows, their tastes change. They become more aware of their surroundings and of the passing seasons and fashions.

Shutters become a design feature to them, playing an integral part in the decor theme. Whether it's a particular colour they like, or a pattern they can't live without, you're able to customise the window treatment to suit their taste. Paint each slat a different colour to create a window rainbow, or use a stencil to create a mural effect.

By turning from more traditional window treatments and choosing shutters, you're creating a safe environment that will always be fashionable as your child's taste changes.

If One of Your Early Relations Died of It, Will You Too?

Posted on November 2, 2011

A birth records check is carried out for many differing purposes. One of the most common being a search for the record of a person's birth. It's a subject that is quite exiting for most people. Just the thought of trying to find out things that in all probability they themselves have little or no recollection of.

It is always interesting to take a look at the history of your own father and mother for example. I'm sure that if most people were aware of the escapades their own parents had been up to they would be quite taken aback. "Did Dad really do that?!" In most cases he probably did and a lot more besides.

Yes, getting to know your parents can be quite an eye-opening experience.

Other reasons to conduct a birth records check could be for something much deeper. Some people are enthralled by the past history of themselves and their relations. Some even believing they have lived before and hope to discover something in their search that will throw some light on their beliefs.

In addition to the more popular reasons for seeking out their birth records, other factors can be at play here. It is a known fact and scientifically proven that your eventual demise can sometimes be attributed to the genes of your forebears. In other words, if, say, heart attacks were a common occurrence within your past family immediate circle, then it stands to reason, being that you might be next in the queue, you would want to know about it. This timely knowledge would undoubtedly give you the incentive in taking steps to avert the same thing happening to you.

If you do take it into your head to put a birth records search into action You will find that, as with most things, there is an easy way and a hard way of doing things. There is the usual foot slogging way, there you approach the authorities concerned, adoption agencies, orphans homes, what ever and plead your case. This can be difficult as such institutions do not take lightly to giving out the kind of information you may be seeking. Also the case may be that the person related to the birth records in question, may have expressed a desire for their privacy in the matter to be respected.

In recent times the attitude towards giving out certain types of information has relaxed, making it easier to come across the birth records you are seeking online. There has been in fact a leaning towards what is called open adoptions. In these cases the parties involved are known to each other, thus, the exchange of information between the participating party's is not a big problem.

Cheerful Flowers Chase Away Winter Doldrums

Posted on November 1, 2011

some ways in which you can do so with flowers.

Attractive Cut Flower Bouquets

Even when your backyard flower garden is deep in its winter sleep, you are still capable to decorate your home with gorgeous vases of flowers. Florists, gift shops and even your local supermarket sell beautiful cut floral bouquets year-round, which makes it an easy task to add a touch of color to your house. You can include an opulent look to your bathroom using a container of beautiful flowers. Inside the living room, a floral arrangement will add a classic decorator's touch to the mantel. Or you can add some style as well as beauty to your kitchen counter or dining room table with a vase of fresh cut flowers.

The Beauty of Floral Wall Art

If you don't have any flowers to display, add beauty and color by choosing floral wall art. Displayed in picture frames, art prints and paintings depicting floral scenes can be a fantastic way to cheer up your home's decor. You may even decorate one of the walls by having an oversized floral print or canvas, creating a striking focal point in the room. Reprints and enlargements created from your own floral-themed photographs can also bring a lovely and decorative touch to the walls. In fact, when spring finally comes, you might take some photographs of your own flower garden and use them as wall art. You can create your own beautiful wall decorations using the photographs of your personal garden for only the price of some picture frames.

Living Flowers and Plants

Nothing can beat live flowers and plants for their ability to include a touch of spring in your winter decorating theme. Lots of houseplants have low light requirements, which makes them perfect for growing indoors during those short winter days. If the plants that you'd like to cultivate require more light, just make sure that they are placed near your indoor lights. With a little bit of planning, you may even trick spring-blooming flower bulbs such as daffodils and tulips into blooming in the cold winter months. These kinds of bulbs need to be chilled throughout their regular winter dormancy period, so you're able to imitate this process with your refrigerator. When you plant a pot of springtime bulbs and put them inside your refrigerator for three or four months, you are able to enjoy some beautiful springtime blooms inside while there is still snow outside. Some excellent choices are paperwhites or amaryllis, that are designed to bloom indoors. In the late winter months you may add some fragrance and beautiful color to your house with branches which you force to bloom indoors, that are cut from such flowering trees and shrubs as forsythia bushes and apple trees.

So help your house be more lovely and brighter with some sorts of flowers. You will be very happy you did!
